The Shenzhen PKU-HKUST Medical Center (Medical Center) was jointly established by Peking University (PKU), the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and Shenzhen Municipal Government in 2001.
Based on the model of overseas medical centers as a reference, this collaboration aims to leverage on the strengths of the two world renowned universities in clinical medicine, education, research and international networking to develop a new medical center with clinical medicine as the core, integrating research, education, clinical service and industry. An example of this synergy is the MD+PhD dual degree program launched by the Medical Center through the joint efforts of PKU and HKUST in 2001.
In 2006, HKUST obtained a total of RMB500,000 for three research projects through the Medical Center from the Shenzhen-Hong Kong Innovation Zone Fund of the Shenzhen Bureau of Science Technology and Information.
The ground-breaking ceremony of the teaching and research building of the Medical Center was held on 26 January 2007.
Prof Nancy Ip and Prof Mingjie Zhang of HKUST’s Biochemistry Department currently serve as Deputy Directors of the Medical Center.
The Medical Center planned to set up the Biomedical Institute in October 2004. By achieving synergy between biomedical research and clinical medicine, the Biomedical Institute aims to conduct multidisciplinary research in the areas of molecular medicine, cell biology, immunology, reproductive medicine, and clinical trials. The Institute aspires to promote technology transfer for the benefit of mankind.
The temporary laboratory of the Biomedical Institute is located within PKU-Shenzhen Hospital. In addition to serving as one of the Deputy Directors of the Medical Center, Prof Mingjie Zhang of HKUST’s Biochemistry Department is the Director of the Biomedical Institute.
