The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) was established in October 1991. Within a short span of less than two decades, HKUST has matured into a dynamic, world-class university powered by the dedicated efforts of our outstanding faculty, staff and students. The University attaches great importance to the Pan-Pearl River Delta Region, and has started to develop the three areas of incubation, training and research in Shenzhen since 1999.

With the support of the Shenzhen Municipal Government, HKUST has obtained approval for building its own industry, education and research (IER) base in the Shenzhen Virtual University National University Science and Technology Park. Commenced in mid 2007, the capital development project for the HKUST Shenzhen IER Building has been completed on 22 September, 2011. In the HKUST Strategic Plan 2005-2020, HKUST has set out its focus in five high impact areas, namely Nano-Science and Technology, Biological Sciences and Biotechnology, Electronics, Wireless and Information Technology, Environment and Sustainable Development, as well as Management Education and Research. Some of the R&D and incubation activities related to these five focused areas will be carried out in the HKUST Shenzhen IER Building, complementing the hi-tech developments in Shenzhen. Through this IER project, HKUST aspires to make greater contribution to the economic development of Hong Kong and the region.
